Here is the ananas entrelaces royal, the craftsman has brought together a finely tuned arrangement of fillets and roulettes to create a sumptous festin of intricate detail and iconic mystery. Fortunately there are a number of bindings that have been composed with these particular roulettes. Most appear to be on bindings that contain books printed after 1522 and may be a point of peak production for this workshop. The reproduction of this binding can be found online at the the Bibliothèque-médiathèque de Nancy, ( Rés. 4662 ). Their information for this binding is shown below

Comparative Diagram 1 - precision test.

In Comparative Diagram 1, I have recreated a virtual frame with exact proportions and symmetry to test the actual precision of the central panels. The precision, taking into consideration, shrinkage and imperfections in the leather, is nothing less than astonishing.

We are going to examine fully the roulette that distinguishes this binding from the previous 5 examples on the next page where we will look at Gid 173, a binding very similar to the example shown here. With Gid's 173 rubbing we will be able to identify this roulette (EN b 2) more precisely.
